Metallica filled a void that genuinely needed filling

To me, Metallica filled a void that genuinely needed filling and they filled it well. A major influence on so many bands during the eighties and nineties, they were inspiring and innovative. In 1991 I came out to Australia to produce a band here called Addictive, and they were so into Metallica. It educated me a little further as to what they'd done, and were doing.

There was a night in Tokyo I remember when we'd just done a gig with Gary Moore - it was the late eighties and we were at a popular club called The Lexington Queen. A young chap came up to me and said “May I shake your hand? I've looked up to you for years”. I shook his hand, said thanks and then he wandered off. Someone then said to me; “Do you know who that was?” I said I didn't, and they said “That was the bass player from Metallica”. That stuck in my mind. It was very nice of him, and respectful.

I did enjoy their movie Some Kind of Monster - very entertaining, albeit a little Spinal Tap in parts. I can only wish them well, and send them blessings in doing what they're doing - they're obviously doing something right.
